Hamid Rast Bala, Kabir Saadat Jahani, and Mohammad Ali Arayesh, all Sunni citizens, were executed without notice to their families in Vakil Abad prison in Mashhad. In 2015, they had been arrested—alongside Farhad Shakeri, Isa Eid Mohammadi, Taj Mohammad Khormali, Hakim Azim Gargij and Abdolrahman Gargij—by the Ministry of Intelligence in Golestan Province. They were held in solitary confinement for 10 to 12 months. During their interrogations, they were subject to different forms of tortures, such as beating with electric shocks, spraying pepper spray on their genitals, and threatening to arrest and rape their families. In 2020, the first Branch of the Revolutionary Court in Mashhad, presided over by Judge Mahmoud Davoud Abadi, sentenced them to death. They were charges with baghi [armed rebellion against Imam] through membership in a Salafi group known as Hezb al-Furqan and the National Solidarity Front of Iranian Sunnis. Rast Bala, Saadat Jahani, and Arayesh had no access to an attorney of their choice during the trial. They denied all allegations and their confessions, which were extracted under torture. There is no reporting on whether the Iranian Supreme Court has upheld their sentences.
