The flogging sentence (80 lashes) was carried out against Mohammad-Reza (Yohan) Omidi, a Christian convert and member of the Church of Iran, in Rasht prison. This corporal punishment, given to him for the second time, was because of drinking Communion wine during a church service. He was arrested during a house church meeting in Rasht in 2016. He was sentenced to ten years’ imprisonment and two years of exile in Borazjan in Bushehr Province on the charge of “acting against national security” through the establishment of a house church and promoting Zionist Christianity in 2017. The court of appeals later reduced his sentence to two years of imprisonment. Currently, he is serving his exile sentence in Borazjan.
