Suspicious Death of a Gonabadi Dervishes in Prison

On November 17, 2016, Mohammad Eshaghabadi, a follower of the Gonabadi Dervish Order, died under suspicious circumstance in the Great Tehran Penitentiary, also known as Fashafoyeh prison. He had been arrested in November 3 in his house, but had not been charged with a specific crime or provided with a lawyer. Two days before his death, Eshaghabadi informed his son that the prison officials had transferred him to the prison’s health center, where he was administered injections the contents of which were unknown to him. Such transfers to the health center happened several times and were accompanied by threats and intimidation. Some reports indicate that Eshaghabadi had also been beaten by prison guards a day before his death.

In 2013, Mohammad Eshaghabadi had been imprisoned on the charge of propaganda against the government for about six months. He was also had been injured on his head during the clashes after the destruction of Gonabadi Dervishes Hosseinieh in Qom in 2006. His body was buried under tight security forces’ control in Tehran. There is no official report about the cause of his death.
