Masoud Zargani, a believer of a Shiʿa religious group called “Yamani faith,” was sentenced to one year and six months’ imprisonment. He was tried at Branch 2 of the Revolutionary Court in Ahvaz, presided over by Judge Mahdi Shahin, on the charge of acting against national security through tendency towards the Yamani faith. Some reports indicate that Zargani had been tortured and forced to confess against himself during his detention. Yamanis are devotees of their spiritual leader, Ahmad al-Hasan Yamani, who claims to be in contact with Mahdi, the Twelve Shiʿa Imam.
