Following the clashes in the Golestan-e Haftom in 2018, Sharifi Moqaddam was arrested. He was severely injured but was denied access to medical care. He also did not have an attorney during his trial at Branch 15 of the Revolutionary Court in Tehran, presided by Judge Salavati. Sharifi Moqadam was sentenced to 12 years’ imprisonment, which 7 years and 6 months of it is enforceable, in addition to 74 lashes, 2 years’ prohibition on social activities, 2 years’ travel ban, and 2 years’ exile in Borazjan in Bushehr Province. In May 2020, he and a group of Gonabadi Dervish prisoners were beaten by the Evin prison guards and then transferred to Fashafoyeh prison. As Mohammad Sharifi Moqaddam described in his recent letter to publishers, “Whatever is happening in Fashafoyeh prison is a violation of human rights and not a punishment for a prisoner, let alone preparing the prisoner to return to the society!”
