Behnam Mahjoubi, 33-year-old Gonabadi Dervish, died in a hospital in Tehran. He was serving his two years’ imprisonment sentence at the time of his death. Behnam Mahjoubi had been arrested, alongside dozens of other Dervishes, following the clashes in Golestan-e Haftom in 2018. Dervishes had protested against the restrictions imposed on their spiritual leader Noor-Ali Tabandeh. In 2019, Mahjoubi was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment and two years’ prohibition on membership in social and political groups on the charge of “congregation and collusion with intent to disrupt national security” in Branch 26 of the Revolutionary Court in Tehran. Although he suffered from panic disorder and was unable to serve his sentence, he was sent to Evin prison in June 2020. The prison officials did not provide the prescribed medication that he needed, and instead, gave him other medications, which had side-effects on him. As the result, a part of his body became numb and his physical condition worsened. On September 27, 2020, Mahjoubi was taken to a psychiatric hospital, although the prison officials had told him that he will be transferred to a general hospital. According to some reports, his condition had deteriorated during his stay in the psychiatric hospital. He went on hunger strike to protest prison conditions. He later sent an audio file outside the prison, in which he stated, “I am convinced that they [prison officials] are going to kill me.” He also reported being tortured and treated in an inhumane manner. On October 31, 2020, the prison officials sent him again to the psychiatric hospital to force him to end his hunger strike, which he did. On February 12, 2021, after suffering panic attacks, he was taken to the clinic at Evin prison, where was given medication but then went into coma. He was then transferred to a hospital, where his family were not allowed to visit him. After about one week, the authorities declared his death due to poisoning, by the adverse effect of medicines. His body was buried in Kerman.
