Ardeshir Fanayian, a Baha’i citizen, returned to prison after he had spent several days of furlough outside. In November 2011, he was arrested on the charge of “propaganda against the government,” which was in relation to the practice of his faith and spend about nine months behind bars. On April 30, 2019, Fanayian was arrested, alongside Behnam Eskandarian and Yalda Firoozian, in Semnan. They were charged with “forming and managing an opposition group to disrupt national security” and “propaganda against the government.” In November 2019, he was sentenced to eleven years’ imprisonment, one year of exile in Sistan and Baluchestan Province, and one year of ban on residing in Semnan Province. Behnam Eskandarian and Yalda Firoozian were also sentenced to six years’ imprisonment and two years’ ban on residing in Semnan Province. Judge Mohammad Ali Rostami, the head of the first Branch of the Revolutionary Court in Semnan, also ordered the confiscation of all digital devices and personal belongings related to the case, including the cash in Fanayian’s house. On December 18, 2019, the court of appeals reduced Fanayian’s sentence to six years’ imprisonment. The sentences of Behnam Eskandarian and Yalda Firoozian were also reduced to three years and two years and six months, respectively.
