On the first day of President Rouhani’s travel to Kermanshah Province in July 2016, three members of the Yarsanis community sewed their lips together as a protest against continuous discrimination against Yarsanis.

According to their statement, Siavash Hayati, Amin Abbasi, and Noshad Taheri intended to attract the attention of public opinion to the situation of their community and show the government’s indifference. After several years of attempts, the Consultative Assembly of Yarsan Civil Activists was not given a chance to meet the President to discuss “the solutions to mitigate discrimination against the Yarsani people.” Also, despite the promises by Ali Younesi, Special Assistant to President for Ethnic and Religious Minorities’ Affairs, no improvement have been made with regard to Yarsanis’ civil rights.
