Hassan Dehvari and Elias Ghalandarzehi, two Sunni citizens, were executed in Zahedan Prison. A day before their execution, however, their defense attorney had stated that he requested a de novo review of their sentences because of serious flaws in the judicial process. The sentence was executed when they were awaiting the review. Dehvari and Ghalandarzehi had been arrested on April 5, 2014 and charged with armed actions against the government and cooperation with an opposition group. In 2017, they were tried at Branch 2 of the Revolutionary Court in Zahedan, presided over by Judge Marziyeh and Judge Khosravi. They were convicted based on their confessions, which had been extracted under severe tortures, including whipping, electrocuting them, pulling out their fingernails and toenails, and threatening to rape their wives in front of the camera. They were also held in solitary confinement for 112 days. According to some reports, these two Sunni citizens were arrested as hostages to force their family members, who are members of opposition groups, to surrender themselves.
